About

Dr. John C. Hill describes himself as "driven, leaning into a powerful headwind that no one else can see." John is a physician with specialties in sports medicine and three patents to his name. He is also an extreme athlete who climbs mountain peaks around the world, competes in ultramarathons, and glides down Rocky Mountain hillsides on his bicycle at more than 65 mph, for fun. Yet, John’s most remarkable mountain experience occurred during his short-lived time as a grandfather.

Having survived a deadly avalanche in Nepal and experiencing God’s divine presence on the mountain more than once, Dr. Hill is now sharing his incredible story—of survival, of heartbreak, of living life All In.

The Book

A jolt of wind in the pre-dawn hours awakens Dr. John C. Hill as snow pours through a gaping hole in his collapsed tent. An avalanche has just struck his camp on Mt. Manaslu in Nepal. John scrambles for his boots and gears up to join the early morning chaos. News of deaths and missing climbers emerges as John watches helplessly, still dealing with a devastating loss back home.

An accomplished sports medicine physician and ultra-athlete, John has uncanny familiarity with spiritual experiences in the operating room and on mountainsides. He is accustomed to injury and near-death experiences and is well-prepared. In every arena he attacks life All In. Still, he is not prepared for an infant who would gaze into his soul.

What the Readers are saying
about All In

"All In will have you on the edge of your seat waiting for what's next. It’s the kind of stuff in an action-packed, full of suspense, blockbuster movie, except everything in this book is a true story (not from Hollywood). It’s full of adventure that will blow your mind away. The author puts himself out there in a beautiful way that draws you in for more and makes you wonder about the mysteries in your own life. I'd even recommend reading this book with one or more of your closest friends and talk to each about your own journey through life."

"Despite first-hand experiences on some of the world’s highest peaks, this memoir is far from only a collection of “mountain top experiences.” I laughed and cried at John’s honest reflections. I was inspired by the real-life miracles John has experienced and the faith woven throughout. Can't recommend All In highly enough!"

"All In is a must-read for those interested in learning how a seemingly mild-mannered, soft-spoken physician focuses on not just being a great physician to patients of the Denver, Colorado and surrounding ski area, but also focuses on faith, family, extreme adventure, and endurance. A very humble, humorous gentleman."

"My son, who is a professed non-recreational reader, has been glued to this book!! Not only has the author educated a small army of Sports Med Fellows over the years, but now he is teaching teenagers the “joy of reading!”"

"A powerful reminder that miracles happen and that God works in mysterious ways, that are often difficult to see at the time, but have a profound impact on the way we see and experience life.

Entertaining writing style that makes for a very enjoyable read. Bounces between extreme adventures while examining the heart and soul during unimaginable challenges at home. This book gives a glimpse into the most personal inner dynamics of a man and his family through the lense of a tragedy, but instead of leaving feeling depressed you find hope and grace. Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down!!! Very gripping story."

"Years ago, when my wife and I lived in Colorado, one of my favorite people was our physician, Dr. John Hill. Once I picked up All In, I couldn’t put it down. By the title, you know you’ll get stories about his brushes with death climbing the world’s tallest mountains, but you also get his raw and honest spiritual journey of loving his daughter as she wandered from his care, and then losing her son, his grandson, after only 11 weeks of life. All that to say, this isn’t me just recommending a friend’s book. I’d recommend it regardless who wrote it, I just happen to also know that John is the real deal, which makes the book even better. I should also add, I did climb with him once and wouldn’t recommend that as much as I recommend his book. He’s unquestionably part mountain goat, which I am not. I spent the day fighting off altitude sickness as my doctor bounded from rock to rock. Good times."

"I just finished All In. I had no idea… I am a bit without words. The impact of this story addresses so many issues—spiritual, relational, personal grit, and growth. The author has not wasted any of what the Lord has allowed into his life: his battles, successes, and failures. This story will inspire hope and determination (we need both in our world) and to look to the God who still performs miracles."

"I don’t often write reviews..

I don’t often read an entire book in 2 days...
All In grabbed my attention right away and I could not put it down. Dr. Hill’s story is exciting and truly personal. A window into a life split into personal adventures, caring for patients, medical research, and 100-mile marathons through the Rocky Mountains ...all while enduring personal tragedy. A real (hard) look at what love and commitment looks like."

"John Hill is a doctor, an athlete, a teacher, a friend, a family guy, and a man of steadfast faith (not necessarily in that order). He demonstrates each of these facets of his life as he expertly intertwines the story of his nearly insane drive to attain the highest heights in extreme sports with that of the brief, tragic, soul-stirring life of his grandson Owen. With humor and humility, Hill has boldly exposed himself—successes and flaws alike—in order to clearly demonstrate the source of his strength and the validity of his faith. All In is a compelling, emotional read which kept me riveted and left me inspired. Buy it. Read it. Share it."
